Uchū Keiji Shaider (宇宙刑事シャイダー Uchū Keiji Shaidā?), translated into English as Space Sheriff Shaider, is the third part of the Metal Hero Series, the last of the Space Sheriff Trilogy. It aired on TV Asahi from March 2, 1984 to March 1, 1985. Its action footage was used for the rest of Season 2 of VR Troopers.

Plot

In college studying archaeology, Dai Sawamura deciphered the figures on the Nazca Plain in Peru. Impressed by this feat, the Galactic Union Police recruited him and trained him to be Earth's third Space Sheriff, after which he was given the code name 'Shaider' in memory of an ancient warrior who defeated the villain Emperor Kubilai and brought down the Fuuma Empire 12,000 years ago. The Empire, upon learning of the appointment of Dai as the new Shaider, plots to annihilate him in order to conquer Earth once again.

Characters

  • Dai Sawamura/Space Sheriff Shaider (沢村 大/宇宙刑事シャイダー Sawamura Dai/Uchū Keiji Shaidā?): Former archaeologist, now Space Sheriff. Named after the warrior Shaider, his fate is to repeat his predecessor's destiny by saving Earth from Fuuma. Usually patrols the streets using a blue 1980's Suzuki Jimny.
  • Annie (アニー An'ni?): Dai's classmate. Her homeworld of Mount was annihilated by Fuuma. She requested to be assigned to Earth with Dai, with intentions of avenging the destruction of her home planet. She usually drives a yellow Mazda RX-7 FB to patrol the streets or arrive at the scene of a battle.
  • Commander Com: He is the commander of Galactic Union Patrol and the father of Mimi.
  • Marin: Commander Com's assistant.
  • Mimi: She is the daughter of Commander Com and Gavan's assistant and fiancée. She is a teacher at the Space Sheriff School. She asks Shaider to take Annie with him to Earth. After the final battle against Fuuma, she marries Gavan.
  • Gavan: Captain of Galactic Union Patrol. He battles Fuuma to defend the Bird Planet. After the battle against Fuuma, he announces his marriage to Mimi.
  • Sharivan: He is a Space Sheriff from Iga Planet and helps defend that planet from Fuuma attack.
  • Ullu: Has a face like a squirrel. He is Dai's classmate and friend. He is killed when Fuuma attacks his home planet during the Great Invasion.
  • Kitz: Has a face like a bird. He is Dai's classmate and friend. He is killed when Fuuma attacks his home planet during the Great Invasion.
  • Vivian: Journalist who writes a book about the Space Sheriffs. She is a favorite daughter of the mayor of Bird Planet. She falls in love with Shaider, causing Annie to be jealous. She was brainwashed by Fuuma to destroy Vavilos.

Vehicles and Arsenal

  • Vavilos: The giant spaceship headquarters of Shaider and Annie. The base of their operations as it circles around the Earth. It can fire the Vavilos Beam from its wings. Whenever Shaider enters the Strange Realm and encounters a giant Fuuma gunship, he summons Vavilos, commanding it to transform either into a giant gun called the Big Magnum or a giant robot whose chest emits a giant laser beam called Vavilos Fire, fires Vavilos Lasers from its hands, and can shoot Vavilos Missiles.
  • Shaian: A multi-part tank that holds both the Sky Shaian and the Battle Shaian.
  • Sky Shaian: is a fighter jet driven by Shaider or Annie to attack and to destroy carriage-like Fuuma jet fighters. It blasts Shaian Beams to destroy Fumma jet fighters. Also known as the Sky Striker.
  • Battle Shaian: Also known as the Battle Tank, it is a giant tank that drills underground. It contains Shaian Rockets (Battle Tank Rockets) to attack enemy arsenals on the ground, or underground, rescuing people enslaved by Fuuma in the process. It is also equipped with a Shaian Searcher.
  • Blue Hawk: A Suzuki motorcycle that serves as Shaider's vehicle to enter the "Strange Realm" in order to chase the Fuuma's Strange Beast. Capable of shooting Hawk Lasers and Hawk Missiles.
  • Suzuki SJ: A stock mini-SUV from Suzuki with Jimny livery and spare tire cover design, which Dai uses to patrol in plain clothes. Essentially the same vehicle used in Uchuu Keiji Gavan, only colored blue.
  • Savanna RX-7: a yellow sports car from Mazda which Annie uses to patrol in plain clothes.
  • Laser Blade (Shaider Cutter): Shaider's sword, drawn like a metal tape measure from his waist. It sometimes assumes a ribbon-like flexibility to hold the Strange monster in battle. It is required to execute his ultimate blow, the Shaider Blue Flash.
  • Laser Shot: Annie's side arm, similar to Shaider's Video Beam Gun.
  • Video Beam Gun:: Shaider's side weapon. It has a video screen to see Strange monsters that turn invisible, and can be used while using the Shaider Scope.

  • Shaider Full Power: A strong punch that was only used in episode 46.

Strange World Fuuma

Strange World Fuuma (不思議界フーマ Fushigikai Fūma?) is a religion from the Strange Palace in the Strange World dimension that reveres Kubilai as its god which intends to conquer the universe through psychological attacks.

  • Great Emperor Kubilai (大帝王クビライ): The ruler of Fuuma and the former ruler of the Mu Empire. He is portrayed as a giant, golden head with three red eyes embedded in the wall of the Fuuma Palace. Later revealed to have had a body once, having tentacled limbs with serpent-like heads on the ends. He was separated from his body by the warrior Shaider, when the latter cut his head off 12,000 years ago and sealed his body in a cave.
  • Shinkan Poe (神官ポー): Kubilai's transvestite grandson who serves as advisor and strategist. He is attired in elegant white robes, and a horned, immense oval shaped headdress. Wields a scepter called the "Sky Cutter". As a high priest, Poe presides over the Strange Beast birth and Strange Dimension Generation ceremonies. Drinking an elixir made somehow from young girls every 500 years, he has lived 15,000 years. Unwilling to have anyone be more beautiful than he, his true face is mummified. He met his end during the series finale (Episode 48) after Kubilai was destroyed. Since his grandfather was no longer alive to give him the energy he needed to stay young, he faded away into nothingness alongside the lower ranked Fuuma monsters. In battle, Poe could toss his scepter as well as blast Shaider with blue lasers from the scepter's core. Poe possessed teleportation and telekinetic abilities that he demonstrated on Shaider, before Shaider broke free from Poe's control.
  • Commander Hessler (へスラー指揮官): A field operative. Hessler oversees the attacks on Earth. He is a proud, easily irritated warrior who argues with his younger brother Himley, who once tried to take his position. Hessler met his end near the end of the series (Episode 45), when he was destroyed by Shaider in battle.
  • Himley (ヒムリー) (Episode 28): Hessler's brother. He is dressed in armor that seems to be spider-themed. He wields two swords and a trident in battle. He and Hessler battled Shaider together. Himley carried with him a venomous tarantula, which he used in his scheme against Shaider and the Earth. He used the tarantula to paralyze Shaider. Himley could blast lasers from the spider's eyes embedded in his head gear and was a great fencer. Himley could also blast webbing-shaped lightning bolts in battle. He was destroyed by a fatal sneak attack inflicted by Hessler. Three of the Girls' Army members developed a crush on him, while the two were on Hessler's side.
  • Girls' Army (ギャル軍団): A team of five deadly kunoichi trained in the most vicious and dangerous arts of combat. They had no individual names, but the production notes listed them as: Girl 1 (black), Girl 2 (purple), Girl 3 (red), Girl 4 (green), and Girl 5 (pink). They are commanded by Hessler. They are rivals with Shaider and Annie. First Girl 1, who claimed to be the leader of the five, was destroyed (Episode 44), and then Girl 3 followed (Episode 45). At the end of the series, Kubilai ate the three remaining girls to give him energy to battle Shaider.
  • Miraclers (戦闘員ミラクラー): Beings with big round eyes and fanged mouths. They act either as foot soldiers or as pilots for the carriage-shaped aircraft. Shaider occasionally pummels them before going on to fight the Strange Beasts. Destroyed at the end of the series when the fortress crumbled apart and exploded.

Fuuma Monsters

Psychedelic, deceptively comical-looking creatures that Kubilai "gives birth" to using a special ceremony with the help of Poe. Their naming system is two syllables, then those two syllable repeated.

  • Baribari (1): A green and red monster with a fanged tiki-like face. It had the ability to roll up into a ball. In the Fuuma's dimension, Baribari briefly became giant and invisible with the exception of its boots and tried to stomp Shaider flat. He was the first of the Fuuma to be destroyed by Shaider's finishing attack.
  • Petopeto (2): A hideous brown-furred and green colored canine monster. Petopeto disguised itself as a hippie dwarf and carried around with him a trumpet. Taking a small group of low level Fuuma incognito as a carnival band, they paraded around town while Petopeto shot out small particles from its mouth, which caused animals to go insane. Destroyed by Shaider's finisher attack.
  • Girugiru (3): A green plant monster with spikes and a venus flytrap type mouth protruding from the top of its head. Kubilai created it after being inspired by Poe's deadly plant. Like the plant, Girugiru could spray corrosive pollen, which he demonstrated by using the flytrap on his head. Girugiru and some other lower level Fuuma were disguised as the "surviving members" of Annie's family from her home planet. Shaider was able to see through their disguises and helped Annie to do the same. Once Annie discovered who they truly were, Shaider went after Girugiru and destroyed him with his finishing attack.
  • Meromero (4): A purple warlock-like Fuuma. Meromero disguised itself as a witch to lure and kidnap children, who were then subjected to Fuuma experimentation. The Fuuma's plan was to turn children into hideous animal-human hybrids. Dai was on his way to save the children but had to get through Meromero first. After destroying the machines used by the Fuuma for their surgeries, the children were changed back to normal. But Meromero was still at large; when the fight was taken into another dimension, Meromero gained the ability to disappear and use its cape to attack Shaider. Meromero could also strike Shaider with its skull-headed staff from practically out of nowhere, before being destroyed by Shaider's finishing attack.
  • Mujimuji (5): An over-sized silkworm beast with a goofy looking face on its belly. From the top of its head, Mujimuji shoots strong silky webbing to either restrain a victim or trap them in cocoons. The Girl's Army were going around spreading rumors about Mujimuji being some sort of an enlightened entity. People who bought into the sales pitch were taken to a castle to meet Mujimuji, but soon learned it was all a trap. The victims were released in a zombie-like state, and eventually evolved into a cocoon metamorphosis. Dai's friend Yohko was one of the victims as well. Dai and Annie went undercover to find the so called enlightened one, but Annie herself was kidnapped and only inches away from becoming a chrysalis. Eventually, this Fuuma was destroyed by Shaider in battle.
  • Gokugoku (6): This monster was completely made of food and had a bowl-like hat. It was armed with a giant salad fork and butter knife, which it used as weapons. A young boy was being horribly bullied, so the Girls Army leader invited the depressed child to a restaurant where Gokugoku served up entries and beverages created from its own body. The food gave the boy special telekinetic powers that he used against those people who wronged him: bullies, his coach, and his family. Dai saw the boy's powers in action and had to put a stop to it. Soon, more bullied kids were fed the tainted food and took revenge on their tormentors. Once GokuGoku was destroyed, the spell was broken on the bullied kids.
  • Barabara (7): Dai and Annie received news about a scientist who was on verge of combining the DNA of a frog with roses. The possibility of a frog/rose monster caught the Fuuma's attention, so Dai and Annie went to protect the scientist. However, the Girl's Army arrived first, but could not find his research. They left empty handed, but not before threatening to harm his family. Dai met up with the scientist and Annie offered to act as a bodyguard. But the Girls Army outsmarted Annie and distracted her. For good measure, Kubilai created a frog/rose-inspired monster of his own. Barabara carried a thorned staff and used the petals around its neck to bind Annie. The Fuuma found the data they wanted, but Shaider saved the day and killed Barabara by impaling the monster with its' own weapon. This finisher followed by Shaider's very own infamous attack.
  • Gerogero (8): A green reptilian monster; sprouting from the top of its head was an upper torso of a mantis-like entity. Hessler and his army made an attempt to kidnap a teenage girl named Yukari, but Annie received a strange telepathic message crying for help and came to the girl's aide. After Dai and Annie returned Yukari to her parents, Annie asked about the telepathy, but the father was quick to boot them out. The Fuuma tried to kidnap Yukari again, and once again Shaider intervened. When they returned Yukari to her parents again, they wanted some answers as to why would the Fuuma would want this girl. Her parents revealed that Yukari wasn't an ordinary teen. They found her in a space pod when she was a baby. Dai examined the pod to find a video playback. The video revealed that Yukari was a princess of a planet that was overrun by Kubilai. Her birth parents sent her to earth for safety and when she was of age, Yukari was to return to her home to revive it. But she couldn't accept any of this and attempted to run away. Gerogero and the Girl's Army made their move again but this was their last. Shaider defeated the kunoichi, Hessler, and the Fuuma aircraft. Before killing Gerogero, Shaider severed the second body at its head. In the end, Yukari fulfilled her destiny and returned home.
  • Tamtam (9): A mutant beast with bongos on its chest with the ability to manipulate music. A boy band’s latest song was a big hit and everyone was enjoying the groove. Then, a sudden obsession with the new song seemed too excessive for Dai’s comfort, as kids listened to the song almost on a 24/7 basis and were becoming distracted in school. He attended the latest concert and took a recording sample of the music. Annie analyzed the music and found Fuuma activity at work. Dai went to investigate the band, but found them kneeling before an astral projection of Poe. After Poe warned Dai not to interfere, he heard the sound of the bongos that belonged to Tamtam. Later, angry parents were upset as to how the song was becoming a nuisance in their kids’ lives and began destroying the cassettes. Stores also discontinued selling the album fearing that it was harmful to kids. Obsessed fans went to see their favorite band in concert, but it was part of the Fuuma’s plan to trap them. Dai and Annie crashed the concert and revealed the band as TamTam and some lower level Fuuma monsters. Using his drill vehicle, Shaider saved the captive fans, as well as the real band. Tamtam’s other abilities included teleporting itself by beating its chest. While batting it in another dimension, Shaider also fought off mutant guitarists in gas masks and almost got crushed by a giant mallet drumstick that swung like a pendulum. Shaider defeated and destroyed Tamtam and the real band played their music for their fans.
  • Pasupasu (10): This college professor-themed monster had a giant quill for a weapon, a large hardback book embedded in its' chest and wore a mortiboard with a black graduation gown. While driving one night, Dai almost ran into some kids on bikes. Before hitting them, they flew right over his head! Dai followed them home and asked their parents about the bikes as well as about the kids. The kids did not recall being out as Dai claimed. Later that evening, stuffed animals were floating, the kids were dancing in a trance and a gateway to another dimension opened up with Pasupasu on the other side. The following day, Dai found the kids playing around with his jeep and actually tried to drive it. After apologizing to Dai, he sent them off but was attacked by Pasupasu and Miraclers. The fight ended quickly as Annie came in to save him. Dai went back to the kids’ home to talk to the parents about the Fuuma. Angry, they turned him away, forcing Dai to sneak in the house to set up spy cameras. Everything became weird, as the parents witnessed the flying stuffed animals, the kids acting unusual, and the sight of Pasupasu. Disguising themselves as giant stuffed animals, Dai and Annie waited in the kids’ room for Pasupasu to strike. After gaining access to Pasupasu’s universe, Shaider made his move. After chasing the monster, Shaider killed it with his final attack.
  • Getogeto (11): A police-themed mutant beast who has a small jail door on the back of its head. Getogeto trapped Shaider in a mirror ball prison that Shaider had to blast out of to finish off the monster. Getogeto could also make duplicates of itself in battle through the illusion of mirrors. Destroyed by Shaider's finishing attack.
  • Roborobo (12): A robotic mutant with a mouthless humanoid face and wings on its helmet. It also had red eyes embedded on its helmet and a large, fang filled mouth across its chest. In battle, Roborobo could breathe fire as well as summon three phantom-masked warriors simply by whipping and tossing its' red cape. Roborobo was also equipped with blasters on the top of his head which he could fire rounds of lasers out of in battle. Destroyed by Shaider's finishing attack.
  • Kotokoto (13): An athlete-themed mutant with a trophy-like head, cast iron weights on its shoulders, and a blue one-strap leotard. Among its arsenal, Kotokoto wielded a ball-and-chain flail weapon, a staff used for pole vaulting, and a hoola hoop. He also wielded a sword that he could hook to his arm. The Fuuma used it in a scheme to lure promising athletes into an underground gymnasium where they would become slaves to Kubilai. Destroyed by Shaider's finishing attack, after Shaider split his head in half with his sword.
  • Guriguri (14): A yellow/gold/black-colored dragon-themed mutant with a large, open, fanged filled mouth. It had eyes and scales on the sides of its head. Shaider cut off the extra tips on its trident and impaled it with the sharpest and longest tip to weaken it. Afterwards, he destroyed it with his finishing attack.
  • Bokeboke (16): A scaly, green gremlin-themed mutant with wings, claws, and fangs. Bokeboke originally starts out as a fairly harmless and more adorable creature, despite having an everlasting appetite. When it grows to adult level, it seems to become wicked and strong. Bokeboke could absorb and reflect Shaider's laser attacks back at him. In battle, it could also blast its own lasers, use its strength to toss Shaider around with ease, blast smoke from its mouth, duplicate itself into white-robed goblin-like fighters, as well as teleport while running at a fast pace. When struck by Annie on the back of its head, it seemed to go insane, attacking Hessler and the Miraclers. Shaider concluded that this was its' weak spot and stabbed it with his sword in the exact same spot. Shaider eventually destroyed it, after weakening it, with his finishing attack.

Afterwards, Shaider destroyed the weakened Muumuu with his finishing attack.

Strange Dimension

The Strange Dimension is an alternate universe with various traps and other dimensions. Some of the traps used in this realm are designed to match the monster's theme. Also seen are grunts and minions that assist the monster against Shaider. The temperature in this dimension reaches about 6,000 degrees Celsius. The primary purpose of this dimension is to enhance a Strange monster's powers and abilities by about 4 times, in an attempt to give it the upper hand against Shaider. When Kubilai calls for the Strange dimension, Poe will summon it to draw the beast inside, thereby luring Shaider to follow it into Fuuma territory. Besides the monster and the various traps within the Strange dimension, a constant threat Shaider faces inside is a Fuuma gunship; for this reason, he calls on his battle fortress Vavilos, using either its giant blaster or robot form to destroy the gunship.

Despite an upgrade in its fighting strength, a Strange Beast can still be destroyed by Shaider while inside the Strange Realm. This, in turn, will dissolve the warp until the next time it is summoned again.
